Intermittent fasting is a natural way of eating that more accurately follows the way humans ate hundreds or thousands of years ago. The constant availability of food that we experience in today’s society is a new phenomenon. Think back to only a century ago: many people grew their own crops, raised their own animals, and spent a lot of time preserving food for the winter season. They could not simply stop by the grocery store when they ran out of food. Once a certain food was gone, they had to wait until they could grow, raise, or preserve it again. Constant snacking was not possible because food had to be eaten mindfully. It was important to keep enough food to survive until spring. Looking even farther back in time to when humans were hunter-gatherers, we find a similar pattern. People had to work hard to find their food, by hunting fish and game or collecting berries and plants. Sometimes they had to go long periods without food because they could not find anything to eat. As a result of this history, the human body is well-adapted to a style of eating that includes periods of fasting, and poorly adapted to the constant availability of food that we experience today. Intermittent fasting reawakens the body’s natural capabilities to store and use its own energy reserves, resulting in weight loss, increased energy, and a better lifestyle. It’s the polar opposite of many popular diet programs! In addition, intermittent fasting doesn’t require that you eat specially prepared meals or specific diet foods. In some cases (such as the Warrior Diet), following a meal plan can be very beneficial in addition to intermittent fasting. However, in most cases, you can eat the same foods as you have always eaten. It is only the timing and frequency of the meals that will change.
The most important consideration when it comes to intermittent fasting is choosing which plan is right for you. You should keep several considerations in mind when choosing a plan. First and most importantly, does the plan fit into your lifestyle? Many diets involve radical changes in lifestyle that make them difficult to follow. Losing weight is hard enough without having to make huge changes in your everyday life. This is especially true when many diet plans seem to have been designed for people with endless energy and lots of free time. Some people do have time and energy to spare, but many of us have busy lives. When we come home at the end of the day, cooking and working out are not high on our list of priorities! Intermittent fasting solves many of these problems because it doesn’t require radical changes.
